Absenteeism: Deal with the FACTS
Reduce absenteeism in your organisation by using the FACTS procedure.
|
|
What is 'Combating Absenteeism' about?
|
|
|
'Combating Absenteeism' shows a manager using the FACTS procedure to deal with three members of staff who have been absent. The manager is not skilled in tackling absenteeism but, using the FACTS procedure, he is able to reduce the absences. |
|
| |
Why is absenteeism important?
|
-
According to the latest CBI absence survey, absence cost the UK economy £12.2 billion in 2004, £1.7 billion of which was due to staff taking 'sickies' rather than absence from genuine ill health.
-
A total of 6.8 days were lost per employee. Days lost across the UK economy totalled 168 million.
-
By reducing the absenteeism rate by just 1 day per employee, organisations can boost their productivity, improve morale, and improve their bottom line.
|
What is the FACTS procedure for dealing with absenteeism?
|
The FACTS procedure provides managers with a clear and easy-to-use structure to conduct 'Welcome Back Meetings' with absent members of staff. The 25 minute programme uses realistic drama to introduce the FACTS procedure and demonstrate a manager using it with three members of staff.

F = First, find out the Facts about their absences
Before you conduct a Welcome Back Meeting, look through your records to understand the nature and frequency of absence in the past - and to identify any patterns.
A = Ask them about the Absence and…
Ask them to explain why they were absent.
C = Check that they are OK to resume work
If the person has been ill, you should check that they are well enough to resume work - otherwise they might spread their illness to other colleagues.
T = Ensure they Take action to prevent the absence reoccurring
Put the onus on the person to resolve the absence, and stop it reoccurring in the future. Make sure they are committed to taking action to avoid further absences.
S = Sum up
Sum-up what has been said so that everyone is clear. Then see them back to work.
